Three Ways a Guitar Instructor Can Help

I know the parents’ pain when their kid is wrapped up in yet another marathon of Fort Night. These days it is really easy for people to get stuck in the world of electronics and lose that face-to-face interaction we used to have back in the day. This is a great reason to bring a guitar instructor into the picture. Three ways a guitar instructor can help is through consistency, inspiration, and direction.

If a person really wants to pursue their passions of making music, it is very helpful to have someone to guide them and inspire them. My son has several books and access to a gazillion YouTube videos, but it took getting him a drum instructor before he really had any sort of direction. He is now in the jazz band at his school.

A key to my son’s success was setting aside a specific time spot each week for a music lesson. He was then able to add to his previous skills since he had to shut off the computer and put in some practice time. Even though it is easy to put off practicing, meeting with someone to go over what he has learned made a difference. Planning a few minutes of preparation prior to each lesson sometimes turned into a much longer session. Once a person gets started, it is easy to get wrapped up in practicing the instrument.

Guitar Instructors Provide Inspiration

Preparing some killer songs in an easy to learn format is another way an instructor can help. It is so much better to have someone offer up songs and new techniques that are at the student’s level. This happened to me when I brought the Jimmie Hendrix song “Little Wing” to an instructor. He introduced several new techniques based on that song. I practiced constantly on it which increased my confidence on the guitar

The skills add up quickly and by the end of the year there is almost always a significant improvement. This is true even for students who are not practicing regularly. Tracking and adjusting lessons to build off the previous session can make an enormous difference. Having some time set aside will help build the repertoire and knowledge of the instrument is paramount.

All of the other resources out there can really help, but there is nothing like having someone there to help you along the way.
