Online Lessons: Story’s Musical Journey

Story, now 12, had started learning to play guitar when she was 7. The guitar had become an instrument she really started to excel at. But when her family relocated, starting over with a new teacher was definitely a possibility.

This is why I am so glad online lessons were invented. Connecting virtually meant the transition to a new city would have one less concern for them. And of course, I was very happy that I could still teach her. Even though there are some draw backs, having a consistent lesson format can help tremendously when learning a new instrument.

The Privilege to Teach Story

For me, it’s been a privilege to witness her progress unfold. Seeing her confidence grow as she tackles new chords and melodies is just as rewarding online as it was in person. Technology allows me to tailor lessons to her specific needs, demonstrating techniques and still providing immediate feedback.

The flexibility of online lessons has also been a bonus. With the occasional scheduling conflict, online sessions allow us to easily adjust the time without disrupting Story’s practice routine. This consistency is crucial, especially for young musicians where regular practice is key to developing skills and maintaining motivation.

Story’s dedication to her instrument is truly inspiring. Despite the physical distance, her enthusiasm for learning shines through the screen each week. She actively participates, asks questions, and eagerly shares her musical discoveries. It’s a testament to the power of online learning that a strong student-teacher bond can be maintained even in a virtual space.

So, if you’re hesitant about online lessons for yourself or your child, take Story’s experience as an example. Technology has revolutionized learning, offering accessibility and flexibility without compromising quality. With the right platform and a dedicated teacher, online lessons can be just as enriching and rewarding as traditional in-person instruction.

Drum Lessons

A Peek Inside My Drum Lesson Setup

Have you ever dreamt of laying down killer beats on the drums? Well, buckle up because I’m about to give you a sneak peek into the world of my drum lessons, a place where technique meets fun and progress is guaranteed!

What Happens During Drum Lessons

Each lesson kicks off with a fresh lick – a new drumming technique that injects a dose of excitement and keeps the learning curve constantly climbing. We then dive into a tight, 4-bar rhythm pattern, a fundamental building block for any aspiring kit drummer. These short bursts are a fantastic way to solidify the new technique while building a solid foundation in essential grooves.

Picking Songs

Some students arrive with a specific song in mind, a tune they’re burning to master on the drums. That’s awesome! We’ll assess the difficulty level of the song and, if it’s a good fit for their current skillset, we can jump right in and start learning it within the first few lessons. It’s all about keeping things engaging and letting the music be the fuel that propels their drumming journey.

For students who haven’t chosen a song yet, no worries! I’ve got a curated library of popular and fun tunes ready to explore. This way, they can discover new music while honing their drumming skills.

But here’s the secret weapon that sets my lessons apart: a dedicated 27″ monitor! Ditch the tiny notation books – we embrace clarity and comfort. This big screen makes reading drum sheet music a breeze, helping students grasp timing concepts and navigate complex rhythms with ease.

The fun doesn’t stop there. My teaching software is a true game-changer. Imagine this: you’re struggling with a tricky passage in a song. No problem! We can slow it down without altering the pitch, allowing you to master the technique before gradually increasing the speed. This “speed training” approach is a favorite among my students, as it empowers them to conquer those challenging sections with confidence.

Conquering Challenges

Speaking of conquering challenges, let me tell you about Brae, one of my amazing students. When she first started, reading notes seemed like an insurmountable obstacle. Fast forward to today, and Brae is confidently navigating drum sheets, translating those symbols on the page into driving beats and infectious grooves. It’s truly inspiring to witness her progress!

The best part? Brae’s enthusiasm for drumming is contagious. She recently doubled her lesson time from a half-hour to a full hour, and even then, we often find ourselves wanting more! This is the magic of drumming – it becomes an addiction, a creative outlet that fuels your passion and ignites a fire within.

If you are interested in trying out drum lessons, we offer a unique blend of focused technique, engaging repertoire, and cutting-edge technology, all in a fun and supportive environment.

Consistent Practice

The Magic of Consistent Practice: From Beginner to Guitar Hero

We’ve all seen those epic guitar solos that leave us speechless. Fingers flying across the fretboard, complex melodies weaving magic in the air – it seems like these guitarists are channeling pure sorcery. But the truth is far less mystical and far more attainable: consistent practice is the real secret weapon. Just ask Christopher, a student who tackled the notoriously difficult solo in Judas Priest’s “The Sentinel” through sheer perseverance.

Imagine the satisfaction Christopher felt nailing that solo. It wasn’t a stroke of luck or sudden talent explosion. It was the culmination of countless hours spent diligently practicing, dissecting each note, and building the muscle memory to execute it flawlessly. This is the power of consistent practice – it transforms the impossible into the impressive.

Consistent Practice with Anything

Think about learning any skill. Whether it’s baking a perfect souffle, mastering a new language, or even becoming a coding whiz, the initial steps are often the most daunting. We stumble, make mistakes, and feel discouraged. But with consistent practice, those fumbles transform into fluid movements. The brain strengthens the neural pathways associated with the skill, making it more automatic and less effortful.

Consistent Practice

Christopher

Let’s break it down further. Consistent practice isn’t about cramming hours on end in a single go. It’s about dedicating focused time regularly. Think of it like watering a plant. Short, regular bursts of focused practice are far more effective than sporadic marathon sessions. This allows your brain to absorb information, process it, and then solidify those connections through consistent repetition.

Here’s the beauty of consistent practice: it applies to every facet of life. Whether you’re aiming to improve your public speaking skills, become a more patient parent, or simply learn a new recipe, consistent effort is the key to progress.

There will be days when motivation dips. Life throws curveballs, and practice sessions might fall by the

wayside. Don’t beat yourself up! The key is to get back on track as soon as possible. Remember, even a short practice session is better than none. Consistency is about the long game, not about a perfect track record.

Practicing

Here are some tips to cultivate consistent practice in your own life:

  • Set realistic goals: Don’t overwhelm yourself by aiming for mastery overnight. Break down your goals into smaller, achievable steps. Celebrate each milestone, and use them to fuel your motivation.
  • Find a practice method that works for you: Experiment with different techniques to find what keeps you engaged. Maybe it’s practicing with a metronome, joining an online community, or simply finding a quiet corner with your instrument.
  • Make it fun! Learning shouldn’t feel like a chore. Integrate elements that you enjoy into your practice sessions. Play along to your favorite songs, jam with friends, or even reward yourself for reaching milestones.

So, the next time you witness a jaw-dropping guitar solo or marvel at someone’s seemingly effortless mastery of a skill, remember – it’s a testament to the power of consistent practice. It’s the dedication, the focus, and the sheer grit of putting in the work, day after day. And that’s something we can all achieve, one consistent step at a time. The journey to becoming your own personal hero begins with consistent practice. Check out more videos of students here.

Exploring Different Instruments

Heidy’s Double Threat: Why Drums Can Supercharge Your Guitar Skills

Heidy’s journey from guitar strings to drum skins is a perfect example of how exploring different instruments enriches your overall musicianship. Not only will she develop a deeper appreciation for rhythm, but she’ll also gain a newfound confidence in her guitar playing.

Exploring Different Instruments

Heidy is now playing guitar and drums!

Exploring Different Instruments Develops Musicianship

Drums are the heart of any rhythmic section. They lay down the foundation, the driving force that pulls the entire song together. By learning the language of drums, you gain a deeper understanding of rhythm itself. Concepts like backbeats, those steady on-the-beat hits that create the pulse, become second nature. You’ll instinctively feel the groove, that rhythmic pocket where the guitar and drums interlock seamlessly.

Heidy’s strumming will take on a whole new life. Learning basic drum fills and how they interact with the backbeat will translate beautifully to her guitar playing. She’ll understand how to accentuate certain beats, create tension and release, and ultimately make her guitar parts groove with a whole new confidence.

But the magic of drums goes beyond the core beats. Offbeats, those notes played between the main accents, become a playground for exploration. Syncopation, the deliberate placement of notes off the main beat, adds excitement and rhythmic depth. By learning how drums utilize these techniques, Heidy will develop a richer understanding of rhythm as a whole. She’ll be able to experiment with syncopated guitar riffs and adding accents that make her playing more dynamic and engaging.

Final Thoughts

It’s so nice to be able to provide a platform for students to expand their musical horizons, one beat at a time. So, whether you started with guitar or bass and have your sights set on the drums, remember – the most important thing is the joy of creating music!

I encourage students who are curious about another instrument to give it a try. At the very least, they will see what it’s like from another musical perspective. But ultimately, they may discover how much fun learning other instruments can be.

My Door Is Always Open: Welcoming Back Students

This week, I had the most incredible surprise! One of my former students, Christina, wanted to restart guitar lessons. It’s always exciting when past students reach out to pick things back up. It’s a testament to how much fun making music is and it apparently doesn’t fade even after time away.

Forming Connections

I really think that teaching is just as much about forming connections as it is passing along information. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of reconnecting with students who took a hiatus, sometimes for decades! I’ve seen them come back as parents, bringing their own children to discover the magic of music. Others have returned after building successful careers, seeking a creative outlet or that familiar comfort music provides.

Sometimes life throws curveballs that put those connections on hold. Maybe work gets demanding, or a new family takes center stage. Whatever the reason, it’s so amazing when those students want to start back up again.

Never Too Late to Restart Guitar Lessons

It’s a beautiful reminder that learning is a lifelong journey. There’s no such thing as a “too late” when it comes to music. Whether you put your instrument down for a year or twenty, picking it back up is always so rewarding.

Here in my studio, the door is always open to anyone who is interested in learning music! But more importantly, there’s an open invitation to come back, no matter how much time has passed. We can pick up where we left off, or start fresh depending on your goals.

Whether you need a refresher, a supportive environment to tackle a new challenge, or simply a friendly face to chat with about your progress, don’t hesitate to reach out.  Here’s to the power of lifelong learning, and to the connections that make it all the more rewarding!

Amazing Career Path

I Never Imagined…

Teaching music has been an amazing career path. I never imagined how deeply rewarding it would be to build relationships while helping students discover the joy of playing music. It’s become so much more than just teaching chords and notes. It’s incredibly satisfying to hear my students’ challenges and be able to offer support and guidance.

Landon

The other day, Landon, one of my first-grade students, wanted to show his drawing to his class but wasn’t able to. He was very quiet and sad when he came into the studio and I wasn’t sure what happened until his mom told me.

He brought along this incredible drawing to the guitar lessons and revealed a picture unlike any I had seen before. A magnificent dragon, its scales shimmering with a kaleidoscope of pinks and purples, dominated the page. Its wings were powerful and his claws were sharp, ready to take flight. It was a masterpiece, bursting with color and energy.

Surprising Career Path

Landon’s Dragon

We talked about different types of dragons, their strengths, and special abilities. And he told me this purple one he drew “will turn black and be even more powerful when it grows up.”

It was a great looking dragon and he did an amazing job drawing it. It was so much fun talking about which dragons were the most powerful and biggest. I let him know the yellow dragons can stop time for a brief period while they are still young. But I realize I have a lot to learn yet when it comes to dragons.

By the end of the lesson, his whole mood had changed. As the door shut behind him, suddenly, the urgency of my dragon studies became impossible to ignore.

Just One Day in the Life

This was just one day in the life of a teacher. It is so incredible how these things can have such a huge impact on us. If you have a passion for teaching, I highly recommend pursuing it!!

Music Theory

Music Theory: The Secret Weapon You Didn’t Know You Needed

Have you ever wondered what makes a song tick? Why does a certain chord progression evoke joy, while another brings a sense of melancholy? Enter the magical world of music theory.

Now, I’ll admit, I used to be intimidated by the idea of music theory. Back in school, a classmate declared the class “super hard” and that was enough to scare me off. Big mistake. Here’s why:

Music theory isn’t some arcane code reserved for musical geniuses. It’s the language of music, a set of tools that unlocks a deeper understanding and appreciation for the sounds you love. It’s like learning the grammar of your favorite language. It doesn’t make you speak any less beautifully, but it gives you the power to express yourself with more intention and clarity.

It Is Fun!

Here’s the real kicker: music theory is actually FUN. It’s like solving a puzzle, figuring out how notes fit together to create the magic we call music. Understanding scales, chords, and key signatures empowers you to:

  • Write better songs: No more aimlessly strumming chords and hoping for the best. Theory gives you the tools to intentionally craft melodies, harmonies, and progressions that evoke specific emotions and create a cohesive musical experience.
  • Play with more freedom: Theory isn’t about restricting your creativity; it’s about giving you the freedom to explore different sounds and styles with confidence. You’ll be able to improvise, experiment, and break the “rules” in a way that makes musical sense.
  • Appreciate music on a deeper level: When you understand the “why” behind the music you love, it becomes even more impactful. You’ll start noticing the intricate details in your favorite songs, the clever use of chords, and the way melodies weave their emotional spell.

So, the next time you hear someone say music theory is hard, just smile and know the truth: it’s a playground waiting to be explored. It’s a language that, once learned, opens doors to a world of musical possibilities. Trust me, you won’t regret taking the plunge.

Start with the basics, you’ll be surprised at how quickly the “aha” moments start rolling in. Then see you’ll see how much more fun and fulfilling your musical journey becomes.

Feel free to contact us if you are interested in learning more about music theory.

Building Rapport

Why Your Guitar Teacher Rocks (Even More) When You Like Them

We all learn better from people we like. This is especially true when it comes to something as personal and potentially frustrating as learning an instrument. For a guitar instructor, building rapport is one of the most important aspects of teaching; it’s about creating an environment where you can thrive.

Why Building Rapport Outshines Everything

You are far more likely to put in the extra practice after lessons if you are genuinely enjoying what you’re learning. A good guitar teacher becomes more than an instructor. They become a mentor, someone who ignites your passion for music and keeps you motivated. Sure, a teacher might have all the technical knowledge in the world, but if there is no connection with the student, the magic of learning can fizzle out faster than a popped guitar string.

Building Rapport

Gaining so much confidence on the uke

This positive connection goes beyond just enjoying the teacher’s company. Here is why building rapport is key to unlocking your musical potential:

  • Motivation Matters: When you like your teacher, you’re more likely to be motivated to learn. Their enthusiasm becomes contagious. You start to see the guitar not just as an instrument, but as a gateway to a world of musical expression.
  • A Place for Mistakes: Learning guitar is full of stumbles and wrong notes. A good teacher sets up an environment where you can experiment and make mistakes without fear of judgment. This keeps things relaxed and allows you to learn from your errors and grow as a musician.
  • Turning Up the Fun Factor: If your guitar lessons turn into a dry, academic slog, you are going to lose interest fast. A great teacher understands the importance of keeping things fun and engaging. They will incorporate your favorite songs and tailor lessons to your interests. They may even throw in a little humor to keep things lively.

Here is the thing: while the technical aspects are crucial, a good teacher knows that music is about passion and enjoyment. They will strike a balance between building your skills and keeping the spark alive.

So, the next time you rock out with your guitar teacher, remember: it is not just about the notes you are learning, it’s about the connection you’re building. A teacher who gets you, motivates you, and keeps things fun is the perfect recipe for guitar greatness!

Google Drive and Sheets: A Student’s Guide to Organization and Practice

This blog post unveils a powerful weapon in your practice arsenal: Google Drive + Sheets. Sheet is such a helpful tool for our students to be able to keep track of where they are and what we’ve covered.

Why Google Drive?

Google Drive, accessible from any device with an internet connection, makes it easy to stay organized. Gone are the days of lost worksheets or misplaced notes. The nice thing is that it’s completely free and doesn’t require a subscription.

Tracking You Lesson in Google Sheets

Google Sheets, a spreadsheet program within Drive, becomes your personalized practice companion. Here’s the magic:

  • One Simple Link: At the end of the first lesson, we will send a link in an email granting you access to your very own practice tracker sheet in your folder. It is easy to get to.
  • See Your Stuff Only: Google Drive keeps your practice data private. Only you can see your progress and what you are working on. Plus, you can leave notes and questions on the sheet as well.
  • Columns for Clarity:
    • Songs: Track which songs you’re tackling. You’ll also have a record of all of the other songs you have previously learned. You can keep it fun by reviewing those during your practice session.
    • Tabs or Theory: You will have a list the specific elements covered in each lesson (scales, chords, popular riff’s etc.).
    • Practice Hints and Ideas: At the top of the sheet, we put a list of helpful tips and ideas for mastering each song or concept. There are also ideas to make things a lot of fun while you practice.
  • Review at a Glance: Throughout the semester, your sheet becomes a running log of your progress. If you want to review a specific technique, a quick glance at your sheet can jog your memory.

Making the Most of Your Practice Tracker

  • Fill it Up: After each lesson, we will jot down the songs and theory covered. Feel free to add any notes or questions you have right on the sheet. There is even an additional column specifically for comments.
  • Specific: Each column records exactly what was covered in the lesson with the date to make it very easy to find. This is nice if you went on vacation or had to miss a lesson.
  • Own Your Practice: The Sheet can help structure your practice sessions, focusing on targeted elements.

With Google Drive and Sheets working together, you’ll be well on your way to organized, productive practice sessions. Remember, consistency is key!

Chordify

Chordify in the Studio

Getting your child interested in music is a fantastic way to foster creativity, develop coordination, and boost their confidence. One thing that has been a game changer for my students is incorporating an app called Chordify into their lessons. This innovative app is like a musical playground, turning learning guitar or ukulele into a fun and engaging experience.

Chordify

Chordify Layout

It is Inspiring

This awesome online tool is like a musical playground. Here’s why it gets students excited about learning guitar and ukulele:

Jam Along to Their Favorite Tunes: Chordify allows them to play along with almost any song and see the chords displayed in a clear, easy-to-understand way. It’s like having a personal sheet music maker! It uses measures to display the chords and that can help with strum patterns. Each measure has a square for the beat which is ideal when showing them strum patterns.

Makes Learning Feel Like Play: It’s an interactive player that can also animate the chords as the song plays. This helps with chord memorization and speeds up their ability to make chord changes faster. Playing along with the actual song exciting for the students and has made an enormous difference in their chord retention.

Builds a Strong Foundation: It helps develop important musical skills. When students switch between chords, they’re naturally honing their timing and coordination. Plus, seeing the chord progressions visually helps them understand how songs are built.

Boosts Confidence and Keeps Them Motivated: As the student progresses, they’ll be able to tackle more complex songs, building their confidence and keeping them motivated to learn more.

I send each student a link that will have a playlist of songs we’ve covered in the lessons. They can then review songs we’ve done from their first lesson. I have the premium version which unlocks everything, but there is free version allows up to 3 songs per day to use in its basic form.

If you are interested in lessons, please contact me to start your musical journey!
